Use the invented library report below to practise before choosing a real article.

The idea

Choose a short article on a familiar topic. Note its publisher and date, scan for who, what and when, then read again for details. In によると, the phrase before it identifies the source of a report. Record a useful expression in context, summarize without looking and check your summary against the article.

Examples

The city will open a new library next month.
According to the city, the library will also be open on Sundays.
Residents can borrow books free of charge.
A reading event for children is planned.
The opening date will be announced later.
A resident said, “I am looking forward to it.”

Watch out

A headline can omit context, and a quotation is someone’s statement, not necessarily an established fact. Check attribution and publication date before drawing conclusions.
