Write clear steps for a cucumber and tomato salad in polite Japanese.

The idea

Name the ingredients and amounts first: 1本 counts a cucumber, 1個 a tomato, and 大さじ1杯 measures a tablespoon of oil. Then order the actions with まず and さいごに. Use the て form plus ください for each instruction: 洗ってください, 切ってください and 混ぜてください.

Watch out

The て form changes with the verb: 洗う becomes 洗って, while 入れる becomes 入れて. に marks the bowl as the destination of the vegetables. Wash the produce before cutting; the examples give one simple salad, not a universal recipe.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose and fill the blank: まず、野菜やさいを_ください。(洗あらって/洗あらいます)

    洗って

洗って is the て form of 洗う; add ください to make a polite instruction.

  2. Choose and fill the blank: ボウル_野菜やさいを入いれてください。(に/で)

    Show answer or example answer

    に

に marks the bowl as the destination into which the vegetables go.

  3. Choose and fill the blank: きゅうりを_切きってください。(薄うすく/薄うすい)

    Show answer or example answer

薄く is the adverbial form of 薄い and describes how to cut.

  4. Choose and fill the blank: さいごに、野菜やさいとオイルを_。(混まぜてください/洗あらってください)

    Show answer or example answer

混ぜてください means ‘please mix’; washing vegetables and oil together at the end is not the intended step.

Use it today

Write your own short salad recipe. List amounts, then write at least three steps in order using てください. Check that the preparation is clear.
