At a door you wait for a person; before a busy evening you predict a crowd; for a picnic you hope for sunshine. Choose the verb that shows your attitude to the event.

The idea

Beklemek means waiting, as in Seni kapıda bekliyorum, but also expecting: Yarın yağmur bekliyoruz predicts rain without saying we want it. Ummak foregrounds hope in Senden iyi haberler umuyorum. Their meanings can overlap when an expectation is also a wish; ummak can also mean expecting. Umarım can introduce a complete sentence: Umarım otobüs gecikmez. The table highlights the contrast in these examples, not every possible use.

Watch out

Do not replace beklemek with ummak just because the wait involves a desired event: Seni kapıda umuyorum does not say “I am waiting for you at the door”. Conversely, yağmur bekliyorum need not express a wish for rain. Use context, not a fixed certainty scale.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose the verb: your friend has not arrived; you are waiting at the door.

    Show answer or example answer

    bekliyorum

bekliyorum: your friend has not arrived and you remain at the door. This is an actual wait for a person, not a statement of hope.

  2. Choose the opening that expresses your hope for good picnic weather.

    Show answer or example answer

    Umarım

Umarım: the picnic explains why good weather is wanted. This opening introduces the complete clause yarın hava güzel olur; Beklerim cannot simply replace it in this pattern.

  3. All reservations are booked. State a prediction about the crowd, without expressing a wish.

    Show answer or example answer

    bekliyorum

bekliyorum: the full bookings give you a reason to predict a crowd. The instruction asks for that prediction, without saying that you want a crowd.

  4. No further context is given. Which options are possible? Either accepted option is enough; explain how its meaning differs.

    Show answer or example answer

    bekliyorum / umuyorum

bekliyorum / umuyorum: both fit this open context. The first presents the answer as awaited or expected; the second presents it as hoped for. Neither guarantees that an answer will come.
