Both için and diye can explain what an action is meant to achieve. Compare whole purpose phrases rather than translating either word in isolation.
The idea
When the same person performs both actions, an infinitive with için is a straightforward choice: dinlenmek için. With diye, a wish form presents the intended outcome: dinleneyim diye (so I can rest), bebek uyusun diye (so the baby can sleep). A different subject is also possible with için: bebeğin uyuması için. Here the verbal noun carries a possessive ending. These phrases express a goal, not a guarantee that it happens. The linked suffix lessons explain the forms.

Watch out
Do not swap only the connector: dinlenmek diye does not express this purpose. Change the phrase to dinleneyim diye. Nor is diye reserved for different subjects: in the balcony pair, I both go out and rest. This lesson covers purpose, not the other uses of these words.
Try it yourself
Choose için or diye without changing the verb. Dinlenmek ___ balkona çıkıyorum.
Show answer or example answer
için
için: the person going onto the balcony also wants to rest. The given infinitive dinlenmek fits that purpose; diye would require a different verb form.
Choose için or diye without changing the verb. Çay soğumasın ___ bardağın üstünü kapatıyorum.
Show answer or example answer
diye
diye: soğumasın presents the outcome to prevent: the tea getting cold. Covering the glass is the action intended to prevent it, not evidence that it has already cooled.
Choose için or diye without changing the verb. Bebeğin uyuması ___ sessiz konuşuyoruz.
Show answer or example answer
için
için: the baby is the sleeper and we are the speakers. Bebeğin uyuması already names the baby’s sleeping with a verbal noun, so a change of subject does not force diye.
Write either two-word purpose phrase meaning “so I do not forget”. ___ adresi defterime yazıyorum.
Show answer or example answer
unutmamak için / unutmayayım diye
Unutmamak için / unutmayayım diye: both fit because the writer wants to avoid forgetting. The first phrase uses a negative infinitive; the second frames that same aim as a first-person wish.
