English “need” covers several Turkish constructions. You will choose between naming someone’s need and presenting something as necessary, without treating them as mutually exclusive meanings.
The idea
The noun ihtiyaç names a need. In zamana ihtiyacımız var, the need is ours and time is what we need; zaman gerek presents time as necessary. The difference is one of perspective, and both can describe the same situation. Do not divide them into objects versus actions: dinlenmeye ihtiyacım var expresses my need for rest, while dinlenmem gerek or dinlenmem gerekiyor presents resting as something I need to do. Choose the whole construction, not just one word. The related lessons cover the forms.
Examples
- Bugün biraz sessizliğe ihtiyacım var.I need a little quiet today.
- Bu raf için iki vida gerek. Two screws are needed for this shelf.
- Yarın erkenden yola çıkmamız gerekiyor. We need to set off early tomorrow.
- Biraz dinlenmeye ihtiyacım var.I need to rest a little.
- Sunumdan önce dinlenmem gerek.I need to rest before the presentation.
- Bu çizimi bitirmek için zamana ihtiyacımız var.We need time to finish this drawing.
- Bu çizimi bitirmek için zaman gerek.Time is needed to finish this drawing.
- Dosyayı yeniden göndermene gerek yok.You don’t need to send the file again.
- Bu eski kabloya artık ihtiyacım yok.I no longer need this old cable.

Watch out
In dinlenmem gerekiyor, the person who must rest is marked on dinlenmem; do not add an “I” ending to gerekiyor to express that meaning. Also, gerek yok means there is no need, not that an action is forbidden. İhtiyacım yok says that I do not have the need.
Try it yourself
I want some time alone. Use ihtiyaç to express my need: Sessizliğe ___ var.
Show answer or example answer
ihtiyacım
ihtiyacım: the person wanting quiet is the speaker, so the need is “mine”. The final ç of ihtiyaç becomes c before the vowel: Sessizliğe ihtiyacım var.
There is only one screw in the box. Choose gerek or ihtiyaç: Bu raf için iki vida ___.
Show answer or example answer
gerek
gerek: the sentence specifies the two screws required for the shelf. Simply inserting ihtiyaç would leave this construction incomplete; a version with it would be İki vidaya ihtiyacımız var.
The presentation is at nine. Complete with gerek or gerekiyor: Önce dosyayı kontrol etmem ___.
Show answer or example answer
gerek / gerekiyor
gerek / gerekiyor: both make checking the file a necessary step before the presentation. The ending in etmem already identifies the speaker as the person doing the checking.
I already have the file. Choose gerek yok or ihtiyacım var: Yeniden göndermene ___.
Show answer or example answer
gerek yok
gerek yok: the file has already arrived, so sending it again is unnecessary. This does not mean the other person is forbidden to send it.
