Choose what you are praising: an object, an outfit or the person. Examples 4–7 form an original four-turn exchange between two friends; take turns reading the two parts.

The idea

Çok güzel praises something as very nice or beautiful; Çok güzelsin addresses the person directly. Yakışıklı means handsome and is normally used for men; şık means stylish. For clothing or a colour, sana yakışıyor means it suits you, not that it is your size. Accept praise with Teşekkür ederim; Sağ ol is a casual option with a friend. Sen de lets you return a fitting compliment, but you do not have to.

Watch out

Do not automatically reply Rica ederim to praise: it means “you’re welcome” when answering thanks. A direct Çok güzelsin can sound intimate; praising a jacket focuses on the clothing. Güzel is not restricted to women: it also describes things, work and much more.
