These short, original exchanges help you respond to news in everyday conversations and understand similar moments in a series. Learn each wish as a whole phrase.
The idea
Choose by the event: geçmiş olsun wishes someone well during an illness or after a mishap; hayırlı olsun wishes good things for a new home or job. After a death, say başın sağ olsun to someone you address as sen, or başınız sağ olsun with siz, including a group. A simple reply is teşekkür ederim. Learn olsun in these fixed expressions here; its grammar belongs to a separate lesson.
Examples
- Size geçmiş olsun.I wish you a speedy recovery.
- Yeni eviniz hayırlı olsun.Best wishes for your new home.

- — Yeni bir işim var. — Hayırlı olsun!— I have a new job. — Best wishes for it!
- — Başım ağrıyor. — Geçmiş olsun.— My head hurts. — Get well soon.
- — Başın sağ olsun. — Teşekkür ederim.— I’m sorry for your loss. — Thank you.

Watch out
Do not use başınız sağ olsun for a headache or a lost phone: it offers condolences after a death. Write sağ olsun as two words; the whole expression has three.
