A short reaction can show delight, doubt or a sudden discovery. Practise four expressions through original everyday dialogue of the kind you might hear in a scene.

The idea

Treat these as whole reactions: Vay be! often conveys impressed surprise, Yok artık! strong disbelief, and Aa! sudden surprise or noticing something. Gerçekten mi? asks “Really?” and invites confirmation. The first two are informal. Tone and context can change the feeling: Vay be! is not always praise. Keep the two words together when moving a reaction before or after a sentence.

  • Aa, anahtarım burada!Oh, my key is here!

Watch out

Do not read Yok artık! here as “there is none left”. It reacts to the news as hard to believe and can sound dismissive. To check a fact without that strong reaction, use a calmly spoken Gerçekten mi?. Write mi separately.

Try it yourself

  1. A friend shows you a lovely drawing. Complete Vay ___! and type the whole reaction.

    Show answer or example answer

    Vay be

Vay be! fits the lovely drawing because the speaker is impressed by the friend’s work. Be adds emphasis to this familiar reaction; it is a separate word.

  2. A ticket price seems unbelievably high. Complete Yok ___! and type the whole reaction.

    Show answer or example answer

    Yok artık

Yok artık! expresses disbelief at the ticket price. The speaker is reacting to the amount, not saying that tickets have sold out; keep the dotless ı in artık.

  3. A friend announces a new job. Complete Gerçekten ___? to ask for confirmation; type the whole question.

    Show answer or example answer

    Gerçekten mi

Gerçekten mi? gives the friend a chance to confirm the new job. It is a question about the news, so the separate question particle mi completes it.

Use it today

Write a two-line exchange about an unexpected price, then one about a friend’s achievement. Choose a reaction for each and explain the feeling. Continue with the lesson on ya in speech.
