You will ask to try something on, say how it fits and ask for another size or colour.
The idea
Three small patterns carry a talk in a clothes shop. To ask permission, add -ebilir to the verb and put the question word after it: Bunu deneyebilir miyim? To say how something fits, name the person in the dative: Bu ceket bana büyük. To ask for another size or colour, turn the adjective into a noun with the ending of "its": Bir beden küçüğü var mı?, Bunun mavisi var mı?
| Word | Its form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| büyük | büyüğü | Bir beden büyüğü var mı? |
| küçük | küçüğü | Bir beden küçüğü var mı? |
| kırmızı | kırmızısı | Bunun kırmızısı var mı? |
| mavi | mavisi | Bunun mavisi var mı? |
| siyah | siyahı | Bunun siyahı var mı? |
| beyaz | beyazı | Bunun beyazı var mı? |
| yeşil | yeşili | Bunun yeşili var mı? |
Examples
- Bunu deneyebilir miyim? Can I try this on?The ending -ebilir adds "can": dene + y + ebilir. The question word follows it, and the last vowel i gives miyim.
- Bu ceket bana büyük.This jacket is too big for me.Fit is told to the person, so ben takes the dative: bana. Benim would mean "my".
- Bir beden küçüğü var mı?Do you have a size smaller? The final k of küçük softens to ğ before a vowel: küçük + ü = küçüğü. Bir beden means "one size".
- Bunun kırmızısı var mı?Do you have this in red?The colour becomes "its red one" with a possessive ending: kırmızı + sı. After a vowel the ending is -sı or -si, not -ı.
- Deneme kabini nerede?Where is the fitting room?
- Bir beden büyüğünü deneyebilir miyim? Can I try the next size up?
- Tamam, bunu alıyorum.OK, I'll take this.
- büyüğünüthe bigger onebüyüğü-i / -si: his, her, itsnBuffer -n-: evinde, evinden, evineü-i / -ı / -u / -ü: marking the definite object

Watch out
Do not say Bu ceket benim büyük: benim means "my", and fit is told to the person, so use bana (sana for "you"). Also, büyük and küçük lose their final k before a vowel: büyüğü and küçüğü, never büyükü.
Try it yourself
Add the accusative to bu (this): Can I try this on?

Bunu
bunu: denemek takes a direct object, so bu takes the accusative, with n between the two vowels: bu + n + u.
Use ben (I) in the dative: This shoe is tight on me.

bana: fit is told to the person, so ben goes into the dative. The form is irregular: bana, not bene.

Imagine you are in a shop. Write four lines: ask to try one thing on, say it is too big or too small for you, ask for a size bigger or smaller, and ask for another colour.
