The six examples form one paragraph about a library workshop. Then complete four original B2 practice paragraphs. These are learning exercises, not official exam questions; the source links to official sample material.

The idea

Read to the end before choosing. Check three things together: the form required by the sentence, what the expression refers to, and the relationship between events. In the model, bu etkinliğe refers to the workshop, not the library. Yine de contrasts low attendance with a positive assessment; bu nedenle connects limited publicity with people not knowing. Insert your choice and reread the whole paragraph.

Examples

  • Mahalle kütüphanesi geçen ay bir atölye başlattı.The neighbourhood library started a workshop last month.
  • Bu etkinliğe beklenenden az kişi katıldı.Fewer people than expected attended this event.
  • Katılanlar yine de çalışmaları yararlı buldu. Those who attended nevertheless found the activities useful.
  • Duyurular yalnızca kütüphanenin girişine asılmıştı.The notices had only been posted at the library entrance.
  • Bu nedenle mahalledeki birçok kişi atölyeden haberdar değildi. For this reason, many people in the neighbourhood did not know about the workshop.
  • Bir sonraki etkinlik için duyuruların başka yerlere de asılmasına karar verildi. It was decided to post notices in other places as well for the next event.

Watch out

A word can fit the neighbouring words but contradict the next sentence. Do not stop at a familiar combination or assume that bu refers to the nearest noun. Keep the same people, event and time frame in view; more than one option can express the same relationship.

Try it yourself

  1. Read the whole paragraph. Fill the gap with a suitable option; write the words, not a letter. Ekip, serginin açılışına yalnızca iki gün kala salonun kullanılamayacağını öğrendi. ___ hazırlıkları bırakmadı. Başka bir salon bulup sergiyi planlanan gün açtı. (Bu nedenle / Buna rağmen / Yine de)

    Show answer or example answer

    Buna rağmen / Yine de

Buna rağmen / Yine de: losing the hall could have stopped the preparations, but the team continued and opened on time. Both express that contrast. Bu nedenle would make the setback the reason for continuing, which the paragraph does not establish.

Kütüphane yönetimi ___ değerlendirmek için bir toplantı yaptı. Toplantıda kapanış saatinin değiştirilmesi konuşuldu. (bu sonucu / bu öneriyi / bu alışkanlığı)

    Show answer or example answer

    bu öneriyi

bu öneriyi: the readers request longer opening hours, and the meeting considers changing the closing time. This is a proposal being considered, not an existing result or habit.

    Show answer or example answer

    gidermeyi

gidermeyi: the books were already damaged, and the next sentence describes drying and repairs. The aim is to remedy existing damage. Önlemeyi would mean preventing it; gizlemeyi would mean hiding it.

  4. Read the whole paragraph. Fill the gap with a suitable option; write the words, not a letter. Atölyenin yeni saati herkese uygun görünüyordu. ___ bazı katılımcılar o saatte çalışıyordu. Bu kişiler toplantılara gelemediklerini söyleyince program yeniden düzenlendi. (Üstelik / Çünkü / Oysa)

    Show answer or example answer

    Oysa

Oysa: the apparent suitability for everyone conflicts with some participants being at work. Their inability to attend confirms the contrast. Çünkü would give a reason, and üstelik would add supporting information.
