Being able to do something can describe a successful attempt, a skill you had, or an opportunity ahead. You will choose the form that matches the time and the situation.
The idea
For a completed success, use the ability form with the definite past: açabildik means “we managed to open it”. For an ability that existed over a past period, uyuyabiliyordum means “I could sleep”; it does not report one successful attempt. Future ability places the possibility ahead: yardım edebileceğim means “I will be able to help”. It can refer to available time or circumstances, not just a learned skill. Choose inability when an obstacle prevents the action: yazamadım in the past, katılamayacağım in the future. These forms use the inability construction without bil.
Examples
- Dün kutuyu açabildik. We managed to open the box yesterday.
- Sonunda anahtarı bulabildim.I finally managed to find the key.
- Yarın size yardım edebileceğim.I will be able to help you tomorrow.
- Bu sabah otobüse yetişemedim.I could not catch the bus this morning.
- Gelecek hafta toplantıya katılamayacağım.I will not be able to attend the meeting next week.
- Çocukken karanlıkta uyuyabiliyordum. As a child, I could sleep in the dark.
- Dün sana yazmadım.I did not write to you yesterday.
- Dün sana yazamadım.I could not write to you yesterday.

Watch out
Do not read every negative as inability. Yazmadım says only that I did not write; it does not tell you why. Yazamadım says I could not. Likewise, katılmayacağım states that I will not attend, while katılamayacağım presents attendance as impossible. A time word alone does not supply this meaning.
Try it yourself
Choose the form that highlights success after three attempts: we managed to open the box.
Show answer or example answer
açabildik
açabildik: the three attempts make the eventual success important. Açtık would report the opening without highlighting that we managed it.
The phone battery died. Choose the form that says I was unable to write to you yesterday.
Show answer or example answer
yazamadım
yazamadım: the dead battery is an obstacle to writing. Yazmadım would leave the reason for not writing unstated.
I am free tomorrow. Choose the form that says I will be able to help you.
Show answer or example answer
edebileceğim
edebileceğim: being free tomorrow makes future help possible. Edebildim would put the achievement in the past; et- becomes ed- before the vowel, and the future has ğ before -im.
I will be out of town that day. Choose the form that says I will be unable to attend the meeting.
Show answer or example answer
katılamayacağım
katılamayacağım: being out of town will prevent attendance on that future day. Katılamadım would describe a past inability instead.

Write about one thing you managed yesterday, one thing an obstacle prevented, and one thing you will be able to do tomorrow. Add the reason in each case, then describe an ability you had as a child.
