You will describe an action carried out without another action and adjust the wording for a report or an everyday conversation. You will also recognise when a time expression cannot take the same substitution.

The idea

-meksizin and -maksızın express “without doing” and often sound more formal or written than -meden and -madan. For this meaning, metni değiştirmeden and metni değiştirmeksizin both mean “without changing the text”. Attach the ending to the verb stem; do not add a separate negative ending for this simple meaning. The converb has no person or tense ending of its own: the main verb supplies those. In the first three examples, the subject of the main verb also controls the omitted action.

Watch out

Do not replace every -meden with -meksizin. In göndermeden önce, “before sending”, önce establishes a sequence: checking comes first. Use that expression for timing; göndermeksizin on its own means “without sending”, and göndermeksizin önce is not the construction for “before sending”.

Try it yourself

  1. Use değiştirmek in the more formal “without changing” form. Complete the sentence with one word.

    Show answer or example answer

    değiştirmeksizin

değiştirmeksizin: publication happened, but alteration did not. The front vowel in the stem gives this form; the ending of yayımladık already identifies the past event and “we”.

  2. Use bakmak in the more formal “without looking” form. Complete the sentence with one word.

    Show answer or example answer

    bakmaksızın

bakmaksızın: the speakers spoke without consulting their notes. The last vowel of bak- is back, so this word uses the back-vowel form; looking is the omitted action, not speaking.

  3. Add the word that explicitly means “before”: we checked the name before sending the file.

    Show answer or example answer

    önce

önce: the name check precedes sending. This word makes the intended sequence explicit; it does not say that the file will never be sent.

  4. Rewrite Ekip ara vermeksizin çalıştı in everyday language. Replace only vermeksizin, keeping “without taking a break”.

    Show answer or example answer

    vermeden

vermeden: in ara vermeden, the team still works without taking a break. Replacing vermeksizin changes the tone to everyday language, not the absence of a break.

Use it today

Write two versions of a sentence about publishing a text without changing it: one conversational and one more formal. Then write a separate sentence about checking the text before sending it. Explain what changes in meaning or tone.
