You will say what you are going to do by adding -ecek or -acak and a person ending to a verb stem.
The idea
The future says what will happen. Add -ecek to a stem whose last vowel is front (e i ö ü) and -acak to one whose last vowel is back (a ı o u): gelecek, yapacak. After a stem ending in a vowel put a y in between: bekleyecek, okuyacak. Then add the person ending: -im / -ım, -sin / -sın, nothing, -iz / -ız, -siniz / -sınız, -ler / -lar. A final k becomes ğ before a vowel: geleceğim.
| Person | gelmek | yapmak |
|---|---|---|
| ben | geleceğim | yapacağım |
| sen | geleceksin | yapacaksın |
| o | gelecek | yapacak |
| biz | geleceğiz | yapacağız |
| siz | geleceksiniz | yapacaksınız |
| onlar | gelecekler | yapacaklar |
Examples
- Yarın okula gideceğim.I will go to school tomorrow. The verb gitmek softens its t to d before a vowel: gideceğim. The pronoun ben is dropped, since -im already shows the person.
- Annem akşam çorba yapacak. My mother will make soup this evening.
- Hafta sonu arkadaşlarımızla buluşacağız.We will meet our friends at the weekend.
- geleceğimI will comegeleceğ-ecek / -acak: will, going toim-im / -sin / -iz / -siniz: I am, you are, we are
- okuyacaklarthey will readokuyacak-ecek / -acak: will, going tolar-im / -sin / -iz / -siniz: I am, you are, we are
- bekleyeceksinizyou will wait (plural or polite)bekleyecek-ecek / -acak: will, going tosiniz-im / -sin / -iz / -siniz: I am, you are, we are
- Akşam balık yiyeceğim.I will eat fish this evening. The verb yemek changes ye- to yi- before -yecek: yiyeceğim. demek does the same: diyecek.
- Yarın ne yapacaksın?What will you do tomorrow? The question word ne needs no extra particle. The ending -sın already means "you", so sen can be dropped.

Watch out
Before a vowel the final k turns into ğ, so write geleceğim and yapacağız, not gelecekim or yapacakız. The k stays before a consonant: geleceksin, gelecekler.
Try it yourself
Put gelmek (come) in the future: I will come tomorrow.
Show answer or example answer
geleceğim
geleceğim: the last vowel of gel- is e, so -ecek; -im starts with a vowel, so the k becomes ğ.
Put gitmek (go) in the future: We will go tomorrow.
Show answer or example answer
gideceğiz
gideceğiz: gitmek softens its t to d (gid-), and -iz starts with a vowel, hence -eceğ-.
Put beklemek (wait) in the future: You (plural) will wait tomorrow.
Show answer or example answer
bekleyeceksiniz
bekleyeceksiniz: bekle- ends in a vowel, so a y comes first, and -siniz starts with a consonant, so the k stays.
Put yapmak (make) in the future: He or she will make soup tomorrow.
Show answer or example answer
yapacak
yapacak: the vowel a gives -acak, and he, she or it has no person ending.
