You will say what will not happen tomorrow and ask whether someone will not do something.

The idea

Put the negative -me or -ma straight after the verb stem, then the future -yecek or -yacak: git-me-yecek, kal-ma-yacak. The vowel is e after a front vowel and a after a back vowel. Before a person ending that begins with a vowel (-im, -iz) the final k becomes ğ: gitmeyeceğim, kalmayacağız. In a question mi stands apart after the verb and carries the person ending: gitmeyecek misin?

Watch out

Do not narrow -me to -mi as in gitmiyorum: the future keeps its vowel, so gitmiyeceğim is wrong and gitmeyeceğim is right. Write mi as a separate word too, never gitmeyecekmisin.

Try it yourself

  1. Say "I will not come": gelmek (to come), ben.

    Show answer or example answer

    gelmeyeceğim

gelmeyeceğim: the stem gel has a front vowel, so the ending is -meyecek, and the k becomes ğ before -im.

  2. Say "he or she will not read": okumak (to read), o.

    Show answer or example answer

    okumayacak

okumayacak: the stem oku ends in the back vowel u, so it takes -mayacak; the third person has no person ending.

  3. Say "we will not eat": yemek (to eat), biz.

    Show answer or example answer

    yemeyeceğiz

yemeyeceğiz: ye already ends in a vowel, so -meyecek attaches directly, and the k becomes ğ before -iz.

  4. Complete "Won't you go tomorrow?" with gitmek (to go).

    Show answer or example answer

    gitmeyecek

gitmeyecek: in the question the person ending moves onto mi, so the verb stays gitmeyecek and mi becomes misin.
