You will make present continuous verbs negative and ask yes/no questions about what is not happening.

The idea

The negative sits between the stem and -yor: stem + -mi/-mı/-mu/-mü + -yor + person ending. Its vowel follows the last vowel of the stem (e i → -mi-, a ı → -mı-, o u → -mu-, ö ü → -mü-): gelmiyorum, almıyorum, okumuyorum, görmüyorum. After -yor come -um, -sun, nothing, -uz, -sunuz, -lar. In a question, mi/mı/mu/mü is written apart after the verb and carries the person ending: Gelmiyor musun?

Examples

  • Ben bugün okula gitmiyorum.I am not going to school today. The pronoun ben may be dropped, because the ending -um already says "I": Bugün okula gitmiyorum.
  • Annem çay içmiyor. My mother does not drink tea.
  • Çocuklar şimdi uyumuyor. The children are not sleeping now.
  • Bu akşam televizyon izlemiyoruz. We are not watching television this evening.
  • Yarın bize gelmiyor musun?Aren't you coming to our place tomorrow? The question word mu is written apart and carries the person ending: musun. The present continuous can also speak about tomorrow.
  • gitmiyorumI am not goinggitmiyor-miyor / -mıyor / -muyor / -müyor: not doing nowum-im / -sin / -iz / -siniz: I am, you are, we are
  • görmüyorlarthey do not seegörmüyor-miyor / -mıyor / -muyor / -müyor: not doing nowlar-ler / -lar: the plural suffix
  • Kardeşim sabahları hiçbir şey yemiyor. My brother does not eat anything in the mornings. The stem ye already ends in e: ye + mi + yor. It is yemiyor, never yemeyor.

Watch out

Do not keep the vowel of the plain negative: gitmeyorum is wrong, because the -e of -me narrows before -yor and the word is gitmiyorum. The same holds for yemek: yemiyorum, not yemeyorum.

Try it yourself

  1. Make the verb negative: I do not drink milk.

    Show answer or example answer

    içmiyorum

içmiyorum: the last vowel of iç is i, so the negative is -mi-; then come -yor and -um for ben.

  2. Make the verb negative: They are not working today.

    Show answer or example answer

    çalışmıyorlar / çalışmıyor

çalışmıyorlar: the last vowel of çalış is ı, so -mı-; for "they" -lar follows -yor. çalışmıyor is also correct.

  3. Ask the question: Aren't you coming tomorrow? Write the negative verb and the question word.

    Show answer or example answer

    gelmiyor musun

gelmiyor musun: e calls for -mi-, and the question word mu is written apart and carries -sun.

  4. Make the verb negative: Ali sees nothing.

    Show answer or example answer

    görmüyor

görmüyor: ö is front and rounded, so -mü-; in the third person singular nothing follows -yor.

Use it today

Write three sentences about what you do not do on a weekend morning, then check the vowel of each negative against the last vowel of its verb.
