You will turn a verb into its negative present continuous and add the right person ending, so that you can say what you are not doing.
The idea
Put the negative between the verb stem and -yor: gel + -mi + -yor is gelmiyor. The vowel of the negative follows the last vowel of the stem: e i give -mi-, a ı give -mı-, o u give -mu-, ö ü give -mü-. The person ending comes last: gelmiyorum, gelmiyorsun, gelmiyor, gelmiyoruz, gelmiyorsunuz, gelmiyorlar.
| Last vowel of the stem | Negative + -yor | Example: ben | Example: biz |
|---|---|---|---|
| a, ı | -mıyor | almıyorum | bakmıyoruz |
| e, i | -miyor | gelmiyorum | bilmiyoruz |
| o, u | -muyor | okumuyorum | durmuyoruz |
| ö, ü | -müyor | görmüyorum | düşünmüyoruz |
Examples
- Bugün okula gitmiyorum.I am not going to school today. The positive gidiyorum softens t to d before a vowel. The negative starts with m, so the t stays: gitmiyorum.
- Annem şimdi televizyon izlemiyor. My mother is not watching television now.In the positive the stem's e drops (izliyor). In the negative it stays and -mi follows it: izle-mi-yor.
- Biz bu akşam dışarıda yemiyoruz. We are not eating out this evening.
- Bugün çalışmıyor musun?Aren't you working today? The question word mi stays a separate word and takes the person ending: musun. The negative is already inside the verb: çalışmıyor.

Watch out
Do not leave the plain negative -me/-ma before -yor: gelmeyorum does not exist, because the vowel always narrows to gelmiyorum. And do not copy the softening of the positive: gidiyorum has d, but the negative keeps t, as in gitmiyorum.
Try it yourself
Make it negative: I am not drinking tea.
Show answer or example answer
içmiyorum
içmiyorum: the stem iç ends in the front vowel i, so the negative is -mi, then -yor, then -um for ben.
Make it negative: You are not looking at me.
Show answer or example answer
bakmıyorsun
bakmıyorsun: the stem bak ends in the back vowel a, so the negative is -mı, and -sun belongs to sen.
Make it negative: They are not going to school.
Show answer or example answer
gitmiyorlar / gitmiyor
gitmiyorlar: the negative begins with m, so the t of git is not softened, and -lar marks onlar (gitmiyor is also possible).
Make it negative: We are not thinking about it.
Show answer or example answer
düşünmüyoruz
düşünmüyoruz: the stem ends in the rounded front vowel ü, so the negative is -mü, and -uz belongs to biz.
