A discussion about a route or a price need not end with a simple yes or no. You will name whose view you share, limit your agreement and choose a suitable form of address.

The idea

Katılıyorum means “I agree”; ben is optional because the verb already identifies the speaker. Name the person or idea in the dative: sana, size, bu öneriye. Use tamamen for complete agreement and kısmen for partial agreement. Haklısın says “you are right” to one familiar person; haklısınız addresses someone politely or several people. Aynen is an informal “exactly” in conversation.

Watch out

Do not copy the case from seni seviyorum: agreement is sana katılıyorum, not seni katılıyorum. Also, tamam can accept a plan without saying that you share the opinion behind it. Choose katılıyorum when that shared opinion is the point.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with the dative of sen: I agree with you.

    Show answer or example answer

    sana

sana: the listener is one familiar person. The dative of sen is the irregular form sana, so adding an ending mechanically would give the wrong form.

  2. Complete öneri with the dative; write the whole word: I agree with this suggestion.

    Show answer or example answer

    öneriye

öneriye: write the whole word. The idea is the target of agreement; final i takes -ye, with y separating the two vowels.

  3. Choose tamamen or kısmen: I agree with you, but not on every point.

    Show answer or example answer

    kısmen

kısmen: the second clause says “not on every point”, so tamamen would contradict it. This reply leaves a specific part open to disagreement.

  4. Use haklı with the ending for siz: you are right; let’s discuss the price first.

    Show answer or example answer

    Haklısınız

Haklısınız: the cue siz calls for the polite or plural ending. The reply acknowledges the other person’s point about discussing the price first.
