An English 'it doesn't matter' can accept either option or reassure someone after a mistake. Turkish gives you different ways to do these two jobs.

The idea

Use fark etmez when either option is acceptable. Benim için fark etmez limits that to your own preference: it makes no difference to me. After a small mishap, önemli değil or sorun değil can reassure the other person. The first says the matter is not important; the second says it is not a problem. Write fark etmez as two words and keep değil separate too.

Examples

  • Benim için fark etmez. It makes no difference to me.
  • Rengi benim için önemli değil.Its colour is not important to me.
  • Bu benim için sorun değil.This is not a problem for me.
  • Çay mı, kahve mi? Fark etmez, ikisini de severim.Tea or coffee? Either is fine; I like both.
  • Önemli değil, zaten acelem yok. It's all right; I'm not in a hurry anyway.
  • Sorun değil, başka bir bardak getirebilirim. No problem, I can bring another glass.

Watch out

Umurumda değil means 'I don't care' and can sound dismissive; it is not a neutral substitute when accepting either drink. Even önemli değil can belittle a serious concern. For a minor inconvenience, a practical follow-up such as hemen sileriz (we'll wipe it up right away) makes your reassurance clearer.

Try it yourself

  1. Both drinks suit you. Reply with the expression beginning with fark.

    Fark etmez

Fark etmez: both drinks are welcome, so you leave the choice open. Önemli değil would comment on the importance of the question instead of clearly accepting either drink.

  2. Someone apologises for spilling a little water. Use either reassuring phrase from this lesson: we will wipe it up right away.

    Önemli değil / Sorun değil

Önemli değil / Sorun değil: only a little water was spilled and you offer to wipe it up. Both replies reduce the other person's worry about this small accident.

  3. Complete the sentence: it makes no difference to me. Use the correct form of ben.

    Benim

Benim: the blank says whose preference is meant. Before için, the pronoun ben takes the form benim; the sentence speaks for you, not for everyone.

Use it today

Write a two-line exchange about choosing a drink and another about spilling water. Use a different reply in each, then add a reason or a helpful next step.
