You will distinguish a place label from an instruction and unpack the formal wording of earthquake guidance. AFAD is Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority. The examples are original teaching sentences, not current alerts or quotations from the authority.

The idea

Read the place, the action and the time separately. The sign Afet ve Acil Durum Toplanma Alanı identifies a disaster and emergency assembly area. In toplanma alanı, toplanma names the act of gathering; it is not a negative command. In contrast, binmeyin means “do not get in/on”. Formal reports may express the same prohibition as binilmemesi gerekiyor, “it must not be used/boarded”. In açıklama yapılana kadar, kadar sets the endpoint: until an announcement is made. AFAD’s published guidance distinguishes assembly areas from accommodation areas and asks people to await the authorities’ directions for moving between them.

Examples

  • Deprem çantamız kapının yanında duruyor. Our earthquake emergency bag is by the door.
  • Bu levha toplanma alanını gösteriyor. This sign shows the assembly area.
  • Bugün AFAD'ın açıklamasını birlikte okuyoruz.Today we are reading AFAD’s statement together.
  • Sarsıntı sırasında asansöre binilmemesi gerekiyor. The lift must not be used during the shaking.
  • Hasarlı binalara yeniden girilmemesi gerektiği belirtiliyor. It is stated that damaged buildings must not be re-entered.
  • Yetkililer açıklama yapana kadar toplanma alanında kalınması isteniyor.People are asked to remain in the assembly area until the authorities make an announcement.

Watch out

An assembly-area sign does not promise accommodation: toplanma alanı and barınma alanı are different terms. Nor does sarsıntı bitti (“the shaking has stopped”) mean that a damaged building is safe. AFAD warns against entering damaged buildings; the word yeniden in an instruction means “again”, not “safely”.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete the place name on the sign: Afet ve Acil Durum ___ ___. Choose toplanma alanı or barınma merkezi.
