Ekonomi can name an economy or economics as a subject. Here you will describe what a text discusses and whose economy it refers to, without making claims about current events.
The idea
The final i belongs to ekonomi and stays in its forms: ekonomiyi, ekonomiye, ekonominin. It selects front-vowel endings, despite the earlier o: ekonomiler, ekonomimiz. There is no consonant softening. Compare ekonomiyi anlatmak (to describe the economy) with ülkenin ekonomisini anlatmak (to describe the country’s economy): ekonomisi takes -ni when it becomes the definite object. As a subject of study, the bare noun appears in ekonomi okumak (to study economics).

Watch out
Do not treat the final i in the dictionary form as a possessive ending. Ekonomisi means its economy; ekonomiyi marks the economy as an object. In ülkenin ekonomisinde, keep the possessive form and the linking n: simply writing ekonomide loses the possessive marking.
