Use ticaret for trade or commerce as an activity. You will describe how it changes, what supports it and whose trade you mean, without treating every sale as a separate ticaret.

The idea

Ticaret yapmak means to trade or do business; the noun stays bare in this expression. This word keeps its final t before vowels: ticareti, ticarete, ticaretimiz. Compare ticarette and ticaretten, with two written ts. The plural ticaretler is possible for distinct commercial activities, but general trade normally stays singular. The table gives this noun’s forms; the related suffix lessons explain how the endings work.

Watch out

Do not automatically translate several transactions as ticaretler: ticari işlemler is clearer when you mean individual transactions. Also distinguish ticareti as an object from bölgenin ticareti (the region’s trade); when the latter becomes an object, it is bölgenin ticaretini.

Try it yourself

  1. Bu yol ___ kolaylaştırıyor. (ticaret) Complete with a form of ticaret: This road makes trade easier.

    Show answer or example answer

    ticareti

ticareti: the road facilitates trade, which is the object of kolaylaştırıyor. The object ending is -i, and the noun keeps its t.

  2. ___ güven önemlidir. (ticaret) Complete with a form of ticaret: Trust is important in trade.

    Show answer or example answer

    ticarette

ticarette: trust matters within the activity of trading. The locative is -te after the final voiceless t, so both consonants are written.

  3. Bizim ___ bu limana bağlı. (ticaret) Complete with a form of ticaret: Our trade depends on this port.

    Show answer or example answer

    ticaretimiz

ticaretimiz: bizim identifies the owners as “we”. The ending -imiz expresses that relationship; this noun is the subject, so it needs no object ending.

  4. Bölgenin ___ araştırıyoruz. (ticaret) Complete with a form of ticaret: We are researching the region’s trade.

    Show answer or example answer

    ticaretini

ticaretini: bölgenin first requires the possessive form ticareti. The whole phrase is then the object of araştırıyoruz, giving ticaret-i-n-i.

Invent a small port town. Write one sentence about its trade, one about your family’s trade and one about a change affecting the town’s trade. Mark the possessive and case endings separately.
