Hak names a right or entitlement; in a game it can also mean an allowed attempt. Here you will track whose right it is and what role it plays in the sentence.

The idea

Before a vowel-initial ending, hak takes a second k: hakkı, hakka, hakkım. Before a consonant it keeps one: haklar, hakta, haktan. In haklarımız the plural comes before possession, so the stem still has one k. The table separates cases from owners. Hakkı can be a definite object or mean his/her right; onların hakları may also refer to one shared right, depending on context.

Watch out

Do not translate “you are right” with the noun alone: say haklısın. Hakkın var means you have a right or entitlement. Also, hakkı already marks possession in oyuncunun hakkı; making that phrase an object gives oyuncunun hakkını, with an extra n before the case ending.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with “my attempt”: I have one attempt left in this game.

    Show answer or example answer

    hakkım

hakkım: the attempt belongs to the speaker, so the ending is -ım. The vowel brings out the second k; bir keeps the noun singular.

  2. Use hak as a definite object: I will use this right now.

    Show answer or example answer

    hakkı

hakkı: bu points to the particular right being used. The accusative -ı makes it the definite object of kullanacağım; it does not identify an owner here.

  3. Complete with “our rights”, plural.

    Show answer or example answer

    haklarımız

haklarımız: several rights belong to us, so plural -lar comes before -ımız. The stem meets l, not a vowel, and keeps one k.

  4. Add the object ending to hakkı: the player used their own turn to speak.

    Show answer or example answer

    hakkını

hakkını: the player uses their own right. Possessive hakkı takes -nı to become the definite object of kullandı; writing only hakkı would omit the case ending.

Use it today

Invent a game with two attempts per player. Write who has an attempt left, who uses it and what rights the players share. Use hakkım, hakkını and haklarımız.
