Özgürlük names freedom, while özgür describes someone or something as free. Practise discussing creative choices and personal independence, with endings that show whose freedom you mean.

The idea

For the general idea, use singular özgürlük; özgürlükler distinguishes different freedoms. This noun softens its final k before a vowel: özgürlüğe, özgürlüğüm. It keeps k in özgürlükte and özgürlükten. After the plural, the possessive vowel follows e: özgürlüklerimiz. In seçim özgürlüğü, the final ending links the nouns: freedom of choice. A following case adds n, as in seçim özgürlüğüne.

Watch out

Özgürüm means “I am free”; özgürlüğüm means “my freedom” and does not by itself make that statement. Also read the whole phrase: özgürlüğü may be an accusative object or mean “his/her freedom”. Onun makes the possessor explicit.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with the accusative: I want to preserve this freedom.

    özgürlüğü

özgürlüğü: korumak acts on this particular freedom, so the object takes the accusative. The vowel ü follows the last vowel and the final k becomes ğ.

  2. Complete: I do not want to give up this freedom.

    özgürlükten

özgürlükten: vazgeçmek takes the ablative for what you give up. Here the ending begins with t after k, so the stem keeps its final consonant.

  3. Complete with “my freedom”: I have the freedom to choose my own hours.

    özgürlüğüm

özgürlüğüm: benim identifies the speaker as possessor. The noun means “my freedom”, and var completes the idea of having that freedom; özgürüm would mean “I am free”.

  4. Complete with the possessed noun in the dative: I respect his/her freedom of choice.

    özgürlüğüne

özgürlüğüne: onun requires third-person possession, and saygı duymak takes the dative. The resulting sequence is özgürlüğü + n + e, not the unpossessed özgürlüğe.

Use it today

Write three sentences about freedom to choose your working hours, a creative activity and someone else’s choices. Use one possessive form and one form after a verb that requires a case.
