Hastane means hospital. Use it to locate a building, describe where someone works and name a destination. A possessive can express a connection: “our hospital” need not mean that we own it.

The idea

The final e controls the endings: hastaneler, hastanede, hastanemiz. The stem stays intact; there is no consonant to soften. Compare hastaneyi (the hospital as object) with hastanesi (his/her hospital). In çocuk hastanesi (children’s hospital), -si marks the compound; a following case uses n: çocuk hastanesine.

Watch out

Do not add y after the compound form: çocuk hastanesine, not çocuk hastanesiye. The ordinary noun does take y: hastaneye. The expression names a type of hospital, so -si does not mean that one child owns it.

Try it yourself

  1. Fill the gap: I am going to the hospital this evening.

    Show answer or example answer

    hastaneye

hastaneye: gidiyorum gives a destination here. The noun ends in a vowel, so y links it to the dative -e; hastanede would locate the action instead.

  2. Use the plural: The hospitals in this city are big.

    Show answer or example answer

    hastaneler

hastaneler: the sentence describes several hospitals without a number before the noun, so the plural is needed. With a number, use the singular: iki hastane.

  3. Complete with “our hospital”: Our hospital is close to the sea.

    Show answer or example answer

    hastanemiz

hastanemiz: bizim identifies “us” as the group associated with the hospital, so use -miz after the final vowel. There is one hospital; hastanelerimiz would mean several.

  4. Fill the gap: I work at the children’s hospital.

    Show answer or example answer

    hastanesinde

hastanesinde: çalışıyorum asks for the workplace here. Keep the compound ending of çocuk hastanesi, then add the linking n and the locative -de.

Use it today

Write three sentences about an imaginary hospital: going there, working there and its garden. Then change the destination to a children’s hospital and check the ending.
