Patron means boss and can refer to a woman or a man. You will say who receives a message, who has the key and whose boss you are waiting for. In English, “patron” can mean customer; that is not the meaning taught here.

The idea

The stem patron stays intact: patrona, patronda, patrondan. Its final vowel gives u in patronu and patronum, but a in patronlar. Add a case ending after possession: patronumuz becomes patronumuza. The spelling patronu has two jobs: a definite object, or “his/her boss”. Read the whole sentence to tell them apart.

Watch out

In Onun patronu geliyor, patronu is the subject: his/her boss is coming. To wait for that person, use Onun patronunu bekliyoruz. Keep the possessive -u, then add -n- and the object ending -u; patronu alone would lose that distinction.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with patron: I am sending the message to the boss.

    Show answer or example answer

    patrona

patrona: the boss receives the message, so this blank needs the dative. The last vowel is o, giving -a; patronu would mark a direct object instead.

  2. Complete with patron: our boss is here today. One boss.

    Show answer or example answer

    patronumuz

patronumuz: bizim identifies us as the people whose boss this is. There is one boss, so use -umuz without a plural ending.

  3. Use the plural of patron: the bosses are at the meeting.

    Show answer or example answer

    patronlar

patronlar: the prompt asks for several bosses. The back vowel o selects -lar; there is no possessive meaning in this sentence.

  4. Complete with patron: we are waiting for his/her boss at the door.

    Show answer or example answer

    patronunu

patronunu: onun supplies the possessor, and bekliyoruz makes that boss the object. Build patron-u-n-u, retaining both possession and the accusative.
