Find the keyboard settings: Windows—Language & region; Mac—Keyboard → Text Input; iPhone—General → Keyboard → Keyboards; Gboard—Languages → Add keyboard. Add Turkish using the add button or language options. Menu names depend on the version.

The idea

Adding a layout is only the first step: select Turkish in the input menu or keyboard language selector before typing. Open a note and test ç ğ ı i ö ş ü, then their capitals from the table. If several Turkish layouts are offered, choose one and look at its preview to find the keys. Test the two separate pairs ı–I and i–İ; this is an input check, not a sound exercise.

Watch out

The letter printed on a physical key may not match the active layout. If the wrong letter appears, check the selected keyboard before trying again. After a space, reread the word: a suggestion or automatic correction may have replaced your spelling.

Try it yourself

  1. Type IŞIK (light) in lowercase.

    Show answer or example answer

    ışık

ışık: both capital I letters become dotless ı. The middle letter is ş, so three positions need attention, not just the first one.

  2. Type İKİ (two) in lowercase.

    Show answer or example answer

    iki

iki: both capital İ letters keep their dots when made lowercase. A dotless letter in either position would change the spelling of the number.

  3. Retype öğün (meal). Keep all three marked letters.

    Show answer or example answer

    öğün

öğün: the dots on ö and ü and the curved mark on ğ must all survive typing. Check each position even if the keyboard offers a familiar-looking word.

  4. Type the full word for yogurt: yo_urt. Insert ğ.

    Show answer or example answer

    yoğurt

yoğurt: the missing third letter is ğ. Type it between o and u; adding a plain g would not reproduce the word shown in the examples.

Use it today

Type the examples in a note, add a space after each word and compare the result. If you cannot add a Turkish keyboard, copy the needed letters from the table and paste them into your word; do not replace them with similar-looking letters.
