You will build nouns for people or devices and adjectives for characteristic effects from verb stems. The same ending appears in okuyucu (reader), yazıcı (printer) and yapıcı (constructive); context tells you what the resulting word means.

The idea

Remove -mek/-mak to find the verb stem. After a consonant, use -ıcı after a/ı, -ici after e/i, -ucu after o/u, and -ücü after ö/ü. Both suffix vowels match. After a vowel, insert y: ara- → arayıcı, izle- → izleyici, oku- → okuyucu. The table includes all four forms with y. The suffix has c, never ç: öğretici keeps t, and yapıcı keeps p. These words name a role, device or characteristic, rather than marking tense. Add noun endings afterwards: sür-ücü-ler.

Watch out

Do not attach the noun-based occupation ending directly to a verb: kitapçı starts from kitap (book), but yazıcı starts from yaz- (write). Nor does every result name a person: yapıcı öneri means a constructive suggestion, and öğretici açıklama an instructive explanation. Learn established words in context rather than inventing a job title from every verb.

Try it yourself

  1. From öğretmek (to teach), form the adjective meaning instructive to describe an explanation. Write only the adjective.

    öğretici

öğretici: removing -mek leaves öğret-. Its last vowel is e, so both suffix vowels are i; the stem-final t remains. Here the adjective describes an explanation that teaches something.

  2. Use the suffix from this lesson to turn okumak (to read) into a singular noun meaning reader.

    okuyucu

okuyucu: oku- already ends in u. The linking y separates that vowel from -ucu, giving the noun for a reader without deleting the stem vowel.

  3. From sürmek (to drive), form the noun driver with this lesson’s suffix, then make it plural.

    sürücüler

sürücüler: first form sürücü, a driver, from sür-. Then add -ler, because the new noun ends in the front vowel ü. Plural belongs after the word-forming suffix.

  4. Complete: We offered constructive suggestions at the meeting. Derive the missing adjective from yapmak (to do, make).

    yapıcı

yapıcı: the blank describes suggestions that help improve something. This established adjective comes from yap- with two dotless ı vowels; the final p does not turn into b.

Use it today

Write one sentence about a reader, one about a printer and one with a constructive suggestion. Underline each derived word, identify its verb stem, and explain whether it names a person, a device or a quality.
