Describe a reaction by comparing it with an imagined completed event. This page builds the verb forms; the comparison does not establish whether that event really happened.

The idea

Remove -mak/-mek and attach one of the four forms in the table. The first vowel follows four-way harmony; the ending is -çasına after -mış/-muş and -çesine after -miş/-müş. The whole form is one word. Alternatively, attach -mış/-miş/-muş/-müş and write gibi separately. This alternative is common in conversation; the joined form often sounds more literary. For a negative, insert -ma/-me first: duymamış gibi, görmemişçesine.

Examples

Read-aloud uses a synthetic Turkish voice available on your device. Voice quality and availability vary; it does not assess your pronunciation.

Watch out

Keep ç after ş: bitirmişçesine, not bitirmişcesine. Do not read kazanmışçasına as proof of a win: the child’s joy is real in the example, but winning is only the comparison. Keep gibi separate: kazanmış gibi.

Try it yourself

  1. Form “as if having won” from kazanmak. Use either construction.

    Show answer or example answer

    kazanmışçasına / kazanmış gibi

kazanmışçasına / kazanmış gibi: removing the infinitive leaves kazan-. Its last a selects ı; only the joined version also adds the final comparison ending.

  2. Form “as if having finished” from bitirmek. Use either construction.

    Show answer or example answer

    bitirmişçesine / bitirmiş gibi

bitirmişçesine / bitirmiş gibi: the final i in bitir- selects miş. In the single word, the next consonant is ç because it follows voiceless ş.

  3. Form “as if having seen” from görmek. Use either construction.

    Show answer or example answer

    görmüşçesine / görmüş gibi

görmüşçesine / görmüş gibi: rounded front ö requires ü. The later e in the joined form makes its remaining vowels unrounded, giving -çesine.

  4. Form “as if NOT having heard” from duymak. Use either construction.

    Show answer or example answer

    duymamışçasına / duymamış gibi

duymamışçasına / duymamış gibi: the negative adds -ma after duy-. That new a, rather than the earlier u, determines -mış: the comparison is with not hearing.

Use it today

Describe two people reacting as if something had happened. Rewrite each comparison with the other construction, then make one comparison negative.
