Use this verb to say what stays in your memory, what suddenly comes back, and what you cannot recall. The table gives present, past, future and negative forms for all six persons.

The idea

Hatırlamak takes a direct object: a specific person or thing has the accusative, as in seni or o geziyi. The stem hatırla- gives hatırlıyorum: its final a narrows to ı before -yor. It stays in hatırladım and hatırlayacağım; in the latter, y links the vowels and the future ending’s k becomes ğ before -ım. The negative is hatırlamıyorum. For recurring memories, use the aorist: hatırlarım. A question keeps musunuz separate: hatırlıyor musunuz?

Watch out

Do not confuse remembering with reminding someone. Seni hatırlıyorum means “I remember you”; sana cannot replace seni here. In Bu koku bana çocukluğumu hatırlatıyor, the smell brings back my childhood: hatırlatmak is “remind”, and bana names the person reminded.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with “I remember” in the present continuous.

    Show answer or example answer

    hatırlıyorum

hatırlıyorum: şimdi places this memory in the present, and ben requires the first-person ending. The stem’s final vowel becomes ı, not a, before -yor.

  2. Complete with “I do not remember” in the present continuous.

    Show answer or example answer

    hatırlamıyorum

hatırlamıyorum: the prompt says the password is not in your memory. The negative element is -mı- before -yor; simply writing hatırlıyorum reverses the meaning.

  3. Complete with “we will remember” in the future.

    Show answer or example answer

    hatırlayacağız

hatırlayacağız: biz needs a plural ending. The future has linking y, and -acak becomes -acağ- before the vowel of -ız.

  4. Use the accusative of sen: I remember you.

    Show answer or example answer

    seni

seni: you are the person remembered, so the pronoun is the direct object. Sana would mean “to you” and does not fit this use of the verb.

Use it today

Write about a person you still remember, a detail you do not remember, and a day you will remember. Then write one sentence about a smell that reminds you of something.
