Use yükselmek to describe upward movement or a higher level: a balloon, water, temperature or the volume of voices. Start with the forms for o and biz in the table.

The idea

The thing that becomes higher is the subject of yükselmek. A starting value takes the ablative and the value reached takes the dative: on sekiz dereceden yirmi iki dereceye. The stem is yüksel-; its final vowel is e, giving yükseliyor and yükselir. In yükseleceğiz, the future ending’s k becomes ğ before the person ending.

Watch out

Do not give yükselmek a direct object when you mean to raise something. Platform yükseldi describes the platform’s movement; Görevli platformu yükseltti names the person causing it. Use yükseltmek in the second sentence. Also, rising to twenty-two degrees does not mean rising by twenty-two degrees.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with the present continuous: the balloon is rising right now.

    Show answer or example answer

    yükseliyor

yükseliyor: şu anda places the movement in progress now. The subject is the balloon, so there is no first-person ending; the stem’s final e selects i before yor.

  2. Use the future for “we”: tomorrow we will rise higher in a balloon.

    Show answer or example answer

    yükseleceğiz

yükseleceğiz: yarın sets the future and biz calls for “we”. Adding the person ending changes yükselecek to yükseleceğiz; keep the ğ.

  3. Add the ending that marks the final temperature: from eighteen to twenty-two degrees.

    Show answer or example answer

    dereceye

dereceye: twenty-two is the endpoint, so derece takes the dative, with y between two vowels. The increase is four degrees, not twenty-two.

  4. Choose the verb and use the past: the attendant made the platform a little higher.

    Show answer or example answer

    yükseltti

yükseltti: the attendant causes the movement, and platformu is the object affected. The past of yükseltmek has tt: the stem ends in t and the past ending starts with t.

Use it today

Describe a balloon’s movement now and tomorrow. Then invent two temperature readings and write the change from the first to the second. Finally, contrast a rising platform with someone raising it.
