Use artmak when an amount, intensity or degree becomes greater. The increasing thing is the subject, whether it is orders or curiosity. With food after a meal, the same verb can mean “be left over”.

The idea

The stem keeps its t: artıyor, artar, artacak. In the completed past, the stem and ending meet in arttı, with two ts. The table uses the third person singular; this is also usual with inanimate plural subjects. Yirmiden otuza arttı gives the starting and final amounts, twenty and thirty: the increase is ten. İki sandviç arttı after a meeting instead describes leftovers.

Watch out

To say that expenses increased, use Giderler arttı. If you mean that someone increased the expenses, use artırmak, as in Yeni plan giderleri artırdı. Do not treat artmak as a verb that takes the increasing thing as its direct object.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete: Orders increased compared with last week. Use the third-person singular completed past of artmak.

    Show answer or example answer

    arttı

arttı: the comparison describes a completed change. The past ending starts with t after the stem’s t, so both letters are written; the plural orders take the usual singular verb form.

  2. Each new member adds to the group’s experience. Complete with the third-person singular aorist of artmak.

    Show answer or example answer

    artar

artar: each new member produces the same kind of change, so the requested aorist suits this recurring pattern. This verb takes -ar, giving artar, rather than artır.

  3. Complete: The number of participants will increase next month. Use the future of artmak.

    Show answer or example answer

    artacak

artacak: next month places the change in the future. The subject is the singular phrase katılımcı sayısı, so no plural person ending is needed.

  4. Choose the form meaning: Expenses increased this month. The sentence does not mean “their expenses”. Bu ay ___ arttı. (giderler / giderleri)

    Show answer or example answer

    giderler

giderler: expenses are the subject of the change, so there is no accusative ending. Giderleri could mean “their expenses” in another context, but that possessive meaning is excluded here.

Use it today

Write a three-sentence update on an imaginary club: what increased last month, what will increase next month, and what you will do if interest grows. Use the table to check the verb forms.
