You will name common places in a town, ask where one is and say where you are or where you are going.
The idea
Place words answer Nerede? (where?) with the locative: Hastane nerede? – Hastane köşede. To say you are at a place, add -de or -da (-te, -ta after a voiceless sound): bankada, postanede, okulda, müzede. To say you are going there, use the dative instead: okula, camiye, parka. The question word nerede already contains the ending, so there is no separate word for “is”.
| Place | Where? (locative) | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| banka | bankada | bank |
| postane | postanede | post office |
| hastane | hastanede | hospital |
| eczane | eczanede | pharmacy |
| okul | okulda | school |
| market | markette | supermarket |
| park | parkta | park |
| cami | camide | mosque |
| müze | müzede | museum |
| kütüphane | kütüphanede | library |
| durak | durakta | stop |
| sokak | sokakta | street |
| fırın | fırında | bakery |
| sinema | sinemada | cinema |
Examples
- Ben bugün bankada çalışıyorum.I am working at the bank today.
- Babam her sabah camiye gidiyor. My father goes to the mosque every morning.Going to a place takes the dative. Cami ends in a vowel, so the ending gets a buffer y: camiye. Being there would be camide.
- Çocuklar sokakta top oynuyor. The children are playing ball in the street.Sokak ends in the voiceless k, so the locative is -ta: sokakta, not sokakda.
- Hastane nerede?Where is the hospital?Nerede already means “where” and carries the locative, so Turkish needs no word for “is”.
- Markette taze meyve var mı?Is there fresh fruit at the supermarket?
- Fırından sıcak ekmek alıyorum.I am buying warm bread from the bakery.
- kütüphanedein the librarykütüphanede-de / -da / -te / -ta: in, at, on
- istasyonlardaat the stationsistasyonlar-ler / -lar: the plural suffixda-de / -da / -te / -ta: in, at, on

Watch out
Words that end in a voiceless sound keep it hard: park, market, sokak and durak take -ta or -te, so parkta, markette, sokakta, durakta, never parkda or marketde. Mind the last vowel too: cami ends in the front i, so camide, not camida.
Try it yourself
Add the locative to park: in the park.
Show answer or example answer
parkta
parkta: park ends in the voiceless k, so the ending starts with t, and the last vowel a is back, giving -ta.
Add the locative to market (supermarket): at the supermarket.
Show answer or example answer
markette
markette: the final t is voiceless, so -te, and the last vowel e is front.
The children are going to school. Add the ending for going to.
Show answer or example answer
okula
okula: going to school takes the dative; the word ends in the consonant l and the last vowel u is back, so just -a. Okulda would mean “at school” with no movement.
Add the locative to cami (mosque): in the mosque.
Show answer or example answer
camide
camide: the last vowel is the front i and the word ends in a vowel, so nothing hardens: -de.
