You will name the rooms of a home, build compounds such as yatak odası and say what is in each room.

The idea

Single rooms have one-word names: oda (room), salon (living room), mutfak (kitchen), banyo (bathroom), tuvalet (toilet), balkon (balcony), koridor (hall) and bahçe (garden). A room named for its use has two words, the use first and oda second with the ending -sı: yatak odası (bedroom), oturma odası (living room), çocuk odası (children's room), çalışma odası (study). To say where something is, add the locative to the last word: mutfakta, yatak odasında.

Examples

  • Mutfakta çay yapıyorum.I am making tea in the kitchen.
  • Bizim evde dört oda var. There are four rooms in our house. After the number dört the noun stays singular: dört oda, not dört odalar. Var says that something exists.
  • Kedimiz balkonda uyuyor. Our cat is sleeping on the balcony.
  • Yatak odası küçük ama temiz. The bedroom is small but clean.Yatak odası is one unit: yatak (bed) plus odası (room of it). The ending -sı builds the compound. No word for “is” is needed.
  • Babam çalışma odasında kitap okuyor. My father is reading a book in the study.Odasında = oda + sı + n + da: the locative goes on the end of the compound. Learn the whole word first.
  • Misafirler salonda oturuyor. The guests are sitting in the living room.Salon and oturma odası can name the same room, the living room; salon is shorter and very common.
  • Tuvalet nerede?Where is the toilet? At home the tuvalet and the banyo are often separate rooms; the banyo is where you wash.
  • odalardain the roomsodalar-ler / -lar: the plural suffixda-de / -da / -te / -ta: in, at, on

Watch out

Do not drop the -sı: yatak oda is not the word for bedroom, and the locative goes on the end of the whole compound, yatak odasında, not yatak odada. Also keep banyo (where you wash) apart from tuvalet (the toilet): asking a host for the banyo may send you to the wrong door.

Try it yourself

  1. I sleep in the bedroom. Write oda (room) with the endings it needs.

    Show answer or example answer

    odasında

odasında: the compound yatak odası keeps its -sı, then the locative follows with a linking n, so oda becomes odasında.

  2. The children's room is small. Write oda (room) with the compound ending.

    Show answer or example answer

    odası

odası: çocuk odası is a compound, so oda ends in -sı; in çocuk oda the second word would be left without its ending.

  3. I am cooking in the kitchen. Add the locative suffix to mutfak (kitchen).

    Show answer or example answer

    mutfakta

mutfakta: k is voiceless, so the ending starts with t, and the back vowel a gives -ta.

  4. There are two trees in the garden. Add the locative suffix to bahçe (garden).

    Show answer or example answer

    bahçede

bahçede: bahçe ends in the front vowel e, so the ending is -de; the ç stands inside the word and does not decide it.
