Japanese expresses shares with パーセント and 割.

The idea

Put the number before パーセント: 30パーセント is 30%. One 割 is one tenth, so 3割 is 30%. Use の to name the whole, as in 学生の60パーセント.

Watch out

2割引 means 20% off, not a final price of 20%. A rise from 30% to 35% is five percentage points, not a 5% relative increase.

Try it yourself

  1. Write 3割 as a percentage.

    Show answer or example answer

    30パーセント

    3割 is 30パーセント: each 割 represents 10%.

  2. Write 20パーセント using 割.

    Show answer or example answer
