Train yourself to capture the central message of a short spoken passage.

The idea

Listen for the speaker’s conclusion and how it relates to earlier information. A contrast such as ですが often moves from a concession to the point; より introduces a rejected alternative, while まず marks the priority.

Examples

The new system is convenient, but people who cannot use it also need support.
Rather than cut the budget, we should first assess the program’s effects.
Participation has grown, but few people continue to take part.
The survey results are useful, but they alone cannot support a conclusion.
Development near the station should consider both convenience and local history.
At the meeting, let’s hear the people on the ground before deciding on a plan.

Watch out

A repeated or striking detail is not necessarily the main point. Do not assume that an initial positive statement is the final conclusion.
