Use context to distinguish three patterns in original N2-style questions.

The idea

にもかかわらず marks an unexpected contrast after a plain clause or noun. につれて follows a dictionary-form verb or noun and links two gradual changes. と同時に follows a dictionary-form verb or noun and places events at the same moment.

Watch out

Do not choose by translation alone: check the form before the blank and whether the events contrast, change together or happen simultaneously. These are original practice items, not official JLPT questions.
