Japanese に至る: reaching an outcome

The idea

Attach に至る to a noun naming an outcome, as in 合意に至る, or to a dictionary-form verb, as in 実用化するに至る. Conjugate 至る for tense and negation; に至った can modify a noun such as 経緯.

Examples

• 長ながい交渉こうしょうの末すえ、合意ごういに至いたりました。After long negotiations, they reached an agreement.
• 調査ちょうさはついに原因げんいんの発見はっけんに至いたりました。The investigation eventually led to the discovery of the cause.
• 議論ぎろんは結論けつろんに至いたりませんでした。The discussion did not result in a conclusion.
• 嵐あらしの被害ひがいは隣町となりまちにまで至いたりました。The storm caused damage that extended to the neighboring town.
• 決定けっていに至いたった経緯けいいを説明せつめいしてください。Please explain the circumstances that led to your decision.
• 実験じっけんを重かさね、その技術ぎじゅつを実用化じつようかするに至いたりました。After repeated experiments, they came to put the technology to practical use.

Watch out

It highlights the point eventually reached, not merely the reason; に至らない means that point was not reached. にまで至る can emphasize the extent of an effect.
