に沿って connects an action with a line or a guiding standard.
The idea
Use noun + に沿って before an action: 計画に沿って進める follows a plan. Before a noun, use に沿った, as in 希望に沿った提案.
Examples
We will proceed according to the plan.
Please prepare the documents according to the guidelines.
We reviewed the proposal in line with the customer’s wishes.
They provide support suited to each person’s situation.
We walked along the river.
There are cherry trees along the road.

Watch out
The noun is a route or a standard to follow, not merely the source of information. によると introduces a report, whereas に沿って describes alignment.
