Both connect clauses, but they frame the relationship differently.

The idea

Use plain verbs and い-adjectives before either connector. With a noun or な-adjective, use な before のに and だ before けど: 休みなのに, 静かだけど. のに presents the second fact as contrary to an expectation; けど can simply contrast facts.

Patterns to compare
のにけど
休やすみなのに休やすみだけど
静しずかなのに静しずかだけど
高たかいのに高たかいけど
勉強べんきょうしたのに勉強べんきょうしたけど

Examples

  • 静しずかだけど、駅えきが近ちかいです。It is quiet, but the station is nearby.
  • 休やすみなのに、働はたらかなければなりません。Although it is a holiday, I have to work.

Watch out

のに often conveys surprise or dissatisfaction and generally does not lead into a command or invitation. けど can also introduce a request, as in すみませんけど; it need not express an unexpected result.
