Japanese を通じて: throughout and through a medium

The idea

Place を通じて after a noun. With a period, it describes something continuing or recurring throughout it; with a person, medium or activity, it marks the channel or experience through which something happens. を通して is a common variant.

Examples

• この博物館はくぶつかんは一年いちねんを通つうじて開あいています。This museum is open throughout the year.
• 夜よるを通つうじて雪ゆきが降ふりました。It snowed throughout the night.
• 映画えいがを通つうじて日本にほんの文化ぶんかを知しりました。I learned about Japanese culture through films.
• 先生せんせいを通つうじて友達ともだちと知しり合あいました。I met my friend through a teacher.
• ウェブサイトを通つうじてニュースを伝つたえます。We will share the news through the website.
• ボランティア活動かつどうを通つうじて多おおくの人ひとに出会であいました。Through volunteer work, I met many people.

Watch out

A period interpretation covers the whole span, not just one point within it. A medium interpretation does not mean physical passage through an object.
