Match your permission request to your relationship and the situation.

The idea

Attach もいいですか to the verb’s て-form for an everyday polite question. The causative させていただく presents your action as something permitted by the listener.

Examples

May I sit here?
May I borrow this book?
Excuse me, may I ask a question?
May I leave a little early today?
Would it be all right if I took a photo?
May I use this room for a moment?

Watch out

Do not confuse permission to do something yourself with ていただけますか, which asks someone else to act. Extra formality can sound distant among friends, and permission is not guaranteed.
