A letter at the roadside inn

The idea

The address describes a blue umbrella rather than a name. 〜によると attributes information to a source; 〜たら marks the condition for departure. Mina uses the umbrella as a clue and finds the woman before she leaves.

• 旅人たびびとのミナは山道やまみちの途中とちゅうにある小ちいさな宿やどに泊とまりました。The traveller Mina stayed at a small inn along a mountain road.
• 翌朝よくあさ、宿やどの主人しゅじんは一通いっつうの手紙てがみを見みせました。The next morning, the innkeeper showed her a letter.
• 手紙てがみには、「青あおい傘かさを持もった旅人たびびとへ」と書かいてありましたが、名前なまえはありませんでした。It said “To the traveller with the blue umbrella,” but there was no name.
• ミナは昨日きのう、橋はしのそばで青あおい傘かさを持もつ女性じょせいに会あったことを思おもい出だしました。Mina remembered meeting a woman with a blue umbrella by the bridge the day before.
• 主人しゅじんによると、その女性じょせいは雨あめがやんだら出発しゅっぱつするつもりでした。According to the innkeeper, the woman planned to leave when the rain stopped.
• ミナが庭にわを探さがすと、女性じょせいはまだ軒のきの下したで待まっていました。When Mina searched the garden, the woman was still waiting under the eaves.
• 手紙てがみを受うけ取とった女性じょせいは、友人ゆうじんからの知しらせだと分わかり、安心あんしんして礼れいを言いいました。The woman received the letter, realised it was news from a friend, and thanked Mina with relief.

Watch out

Do not mistake the bridge, where Mina met the woman yesterday, for the place where she finds her now.
