Arabic and Japanese mark relationships differently. Look at the whole phrase before choosing a particle.

The idea

Arabic prepositions such as إلى and في come before a noun; Japanese particles follow it. に can mark a destination, a recipient or the location of existence. で marks the place of an action or its means. を marks the direct object; は introduces a topic. These roles do not map one-to-one onto Arabic words.

Examples

  • 私わたしは学校がっこうに行いきます。I go to school.
  • 私わたしは学校がっこうで日本語にほんごを勉強べんきょうします。I study Japanese at school.
  • 友達ともだちに本ほんをあげます。I give a book to a friend.
  • 机つくえの上うえに本ほんがあります。There is a book on the desk.
  • 私わたしはバスで駅えきに行いきます。I go to the station by bus.
  • 私わたしは水みずを飲のみます。I drink water.

Watch out

Do not translate في automatically as で: with あります, the place of existence takes に. With 勉強します, the place of action takes で.
