Put together an email to a teacher you already know, from the greeting through your signature.

The idea

After a clear subject line, address the teacher as 田中先生, then identify yourself as 山田. Give the purpose with 授業について質問があります and ask your question. Acknowledge their time, make a polite request and close with どうぞよろしくお願いします; sign your own name on a new line.

Watch out

先生 is already a title, so do not add 様 to it. The opening here suits an existing teacher–student relationship; for a first contact, introduce yourself and adapt your greeting. よろしくお願いします is a context-dependent courtesy, not a substitute for the actual question.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose and fill the blank:

    Show answer or example answer

    先生

先生 is the title used after the teacher’s name; adding 様 to 先生 would double the honorific.

  2. Choose and fill the blank:

    Show answer or example answer

    質問

質問 means a question, matching an email that asks about class; 写真 means a photograph.

  3. Choose and fill the blank:

    Show answer or example answer

  4. Choose and fill the blank:

    Show answer or example answer

自分の名前 is your own name: sign at the end instead of repeating the recipient’s name.
