Writing a Japanese holiday postcard

The idea

Begin by asking how the recipients are, then say where you are now. Use 昨日 and a past form such as 行きました for a completed outing, and おいしかったです for a past impression. Close with a future connection such as 帰ったら写真を見せますね and sign your name.

Examples

• 皆みなさん、お元気げんきですか。How is everyone?
• 今いま、海うみの近ちかくにいます。I’m near the sea now.
• 昨日きのう、友達ともだちと市場いちばへ行いきました。Yesterday I went to the market with a friend.
• 新鮮しんせんな魚さかなを食たべました。I ate fresh fish.
• とてもおいしかったです。It was very tasty.
• こちらは天気てんきがよくて、暖あたたかいです。The weather here is good and it’s warm.
• 帰かえったら、写真しゃしんを見みせますね。I’ll show you the photos when I get back.

Watch out

Use います for your current location and いました for where you were; do not use a present verb for yesterday’s completed trip. おいしい becomes おいしかったです, not おいしいでした. The examples are polite but friendly, not a formal business message.

   見せます means ‘show’; 見ます means ‘look at’, not show someone else.

Write a postcard from an imaginary trip: greet the recipient, mention your location, one activity and your impression, and add a personal closing and signature.
