Write a clear message using Japanese punctuation.

The idea

Use 、 to separate phrases, such as a condition from the following clause. End a sentence with 。. Enclose someone’s exact words or words you mention in 「 」; when the sentence continues with と言いました, the brackets close before と.

Examples

Tomorrow, let’s meet at the station.
The time is ten o’clock. See you then.
If it rains, I’ll wait at the café.
My friend said, “I’ll be a little late.”
First, write “Good morning.”
What time will you come? Please let me know.

Watch out

A question ending in か can end with 。 in ordinary prose; ? also occurs in informal writing. A comma marks a useful break, not every pause in speech. A final 。 is commonly omitted immediately before 」, though editorial styles vary.
