You can confirm a fact or tell someone that they are right. Turkish often separates these two moves. You will choose the word by what you are judging, then compare two replies that can express the same agreement.

The idea

Use doğru for the accuracy of an answer, calculation or piece of information: Bu hesap tamamen doğru. Use haklı to say that someone has a sound point or good grounds for their position: Bu konuda sen haklısın. The distinction is about meaning, not simply people versus things: haklı bir itiraz is a justified objection. Haklısın agrees with the person; Doğru söylüyorsun confirms what they are saying. In a factual discussion, both can be suitable. For personal endings, follow the linked forms lesson.

Watch out

Do not translate “you are right” word for word as Sen doğrusun when agreeing in a discussion. Say Haklısın or Doğru söylüyorsun. Conversely, an address that is correct is doğru, not haklı: you are checking information, not supporting someone’s position.

Try it yourself

  1. Choose the word for a correct sum: two plus three makes five.

    Show answer or example answer

    doğru

doğru: adding two and three gives five, so the statement checks a numerical result. Nobody’s position in a discussion is being supported.

  2. Agree with your friend: you are right; all the books will not fit in this box.

    Show answer or example answer

    haklısın

haklısın: the next clause gives your friend’s good reason: the box will not hold all the books. You are agreeing with that person, so doğrusun is not the natural choice here.

  3. Complete the sentence: the address you gave is not correct; there is no bakery here.

    Show answer or example answer

    doğru

doğru: the missing bakery shows that the address does not match the intended place. Doğru değil rejects the accuracy of the address; it does not describe a person as unjustified.

  4. You agree that this bag would be too small for you both. Write either natural reply from the options.

    Show answer or example answer

    Haklısın / Doğru söylüyorsun

Haklısın / Doğru söylüyorsun: both accept the assessment of the bag. The first gives the other person credit; the second confirms their words. Doğrusun does not express ordinary agreement here.

Use it today

Write a short exchange about a bag that is too small. Agree once with Haklısın and once with Doğru söylüyorsun. Then write a sentence judging the accuracy of an address. Explain what each reply evaluates.
