You will choose between talking and telling: one verb for the conversation, the other for the words you pass on.

The idea

konuşmak means to talk or to speak: the act of conversing or using a language. The person you talk with takes -le/-la (or ile): babamla konuşuyorum; a language is simply named: Türkçe konuşmak. söylemek means to say or to tell: it passes on particular words, so what is said is the object and the listener takes -e/-a: bana adını söyledi. Fixed phrases follow the same idea: yalan söylemek (to lie), şarkı söylemek (to sing).

Patterns to compare
konuşmaksöylemek
Biz Türkçe konuşuyoruz.Biz bunu Türkçe söylüyoruz.
Müdürle konuşuyorum.Müdüre cevabı söylüyorum.
Toplantıda herkes konuştu.Toplantıda herkes fikrini söyledi.
Yavaş konuşma.Doğruyu söyle.

Examples

  • Annem telefonda konuşuyor. My mother is talking on the phone.
  • Ali bana doğruyu söyledi.Ali told me the truth. The listener takes the dative (bana, to me) and the words that are passed on are the object (doğruyu). That is the pattern of söylemek.
  • Sen Türkçe konuşuyor musun?Do you speak Turkish?
  • Bana adını söyler misin?Could you tell me your name?
  • Yarın komşularımızla uzun uzun konuşacağız.Tomorrow we are going to talk with our neighbours at length. The person you talk with takes -la, the same as ile: komşularımızla. With söylemek the listener would take -a/-e instead.
  • Ne söylediğini anlamıyorum.I don't understand what you are saying.
  • Biraz yavaş konuşur musunuz?Could you speak a little more slowly?
  • Ali şarkı söylüyor.Ali is singing.Şarkı söylemek is a fixed phrase for singing: in Turkish a song is “said”. Şarkı konuşmak is not used.

Watch out

Do not use konuşmak when you pass on a particular word or fact: Bana adını konuştu is wrong, because it needs söyledi. And Ben Türkçe söylüyorum does not mean “I speak Turkish” but “I say it in Turkish”; for the language use konuşuyorum.
