At a bank counter, name the transaction first, then add the amount or explain the card problem. Practise opening an account, withdrawing and depositing money, and asking about a card’s PIN.

The idea

Use hesap açmak for opening an account. Pair the direction with the transaction: hesabımdan para çekmek takes money out of my account; hesabıma para yatırmak puts money into it. Add istiyorum to state what you want to do. For a card question, Kartımın şifresini nasıl değiştirebilirim? asks how to change its PIN.

Watch out

Hesabımda means “in my account”, a location; it does not say “into my account”. When depositing, say hesabıma. Switching çekmek and yatırmak reverses the transaction even if the amount stays the same.

Try it yourself

  1. Yeni bir hesap ___ istiyorum. (açmak / kapatmak) Choose the verb for opening a new account. Write only the missing word.

    açmak

açmak: you want a new account to begin, so choose “open”; kapatmak would mean closing one. The action stays in the infinitive before istiyorum.

  2. ___ para çekmek istiyorum. (benim hesabım) Complete with “from my account”. Write only the missing phrase.

    Show answer or example answer

    hesabımdan / kendi hesabımdan

hesabımdan / kendi hesabımdan: the money comes out of your account. hesap becomes hesabım with “my”, then -dan marks the source; kendi adds “own”.

  3. Bu parayı hesabıma ___ istiyorum. (çekmek / yatırmak) Choose the verb for depositing this money into your account. Write only the missing word.

    Show answer or example answer

    yatırmak

yatırmak: the cash is going into the account, as hesabıma shows. çekmek would request a withdrawal, the opposite operation.

  4. Kartımın ___ değiştirmek istiyorum. (şifre) Put “PIN” in the form needed after “my card’s”. Write only the missing word.

    Show answer or example answer

    şifresini

şifresini: kartımın identifies whose PIN it is, so şifre takes possessive -si. Changing that specific PIN adds accusative -ni, with a linking n.
