Practise a short exchange at a post office or cargo desk. Say what you want to send, ask about the journey time and request a tracking number. The dialogue is fictional; it gives no delivery estimate.

The idea

Start with Bu paketi göndermek istiyorum to name your request. For the time the journey takes, ask Kaç günde ulaşır?: here günde measures the days needed to reach the destination. Ask Gönderi ücreti ne kadar? for the price and Takip numarasını alabilir miyim? for the tracking number. These questions gather separate pieces of information; none promises an arrival date.

Müşteri: Bu mektubu İzmir'e göndermek istiyorum.

Müşteri: Bir doğum günü kartı var. Kaç günde ulaşır?

Görevli: Süreyi kontrol edeyim.

Müşteri: Gönderi ücreti ne kadar?

Görevli: Önce zarfı tartalım.

Watch out

Do not drop the ending in kaç günde: Kaç gün ulaşır? does not ask how long delivery takes. Kaç gün sonra ulaşır? is a valid but differently framed question: how many days from now will it arrive? With günde, the verb matters: günde iki kez means twice a day, but iki günde ulaşır describes a two-day journey.

Try it yourself

  1. Complete with the appropriate form of göndermek: I want to send this parcel today.

    Show answer or example answer

    göndermek

göndermek: the sending is the action you want to do, so it stays in the infinitive before istiyorum. Gönderiyorum would say you are sending it already.

  2. Complete with gün: ask how many days delivery takes.

    Show answer or example answer

    günde

günde: ulaşır gives an endpoint, so this form asks for the time needed to reach it. The front vowel ü selects -de; gün stays singular after kaç.

  3. Complete with paket: please put this parcel on the scales.

    Show answer or example answer

    paketi

paketi: bu identifies a particular parcel, making it a definite object of koyun. Add -i and keep the final t: this word does not become pakedi.

  4. Complete the request for the tracking number by adding the object ending to numarası.

    Show answer or example answer

    numarasını

numarasını: the compound is takip numarası. Its final -sı remains, and -nı adds the accusative after it. The request is to receive that specific number.

Use it today

In pairs, act out sending a parcel containing two books. Ask about duration, cost and a tracking number. Let the clerk say they will check the duration; do not invent a delivery promise.
